Mezuzah

The Mezuzah is is a piece of parchment, known as a klaf, contained in a decorative case and inscribed with specific Hebrew verses from the Torah. The Mezuzah is affixed to the doorpost of Jewish homes to protect the residents of the house. What is a mezuzah? A Jewish holy symbol fixed on the door frame, the mezuzah consists of the mezuzah case and the parchment. The parchment is written by a sofer setam in hand writing  the verses 'Shema Israel', and 'And if she hears' from Pentateuch. On the back side are written 3 letters: ש ד י which are the name of God and also the initials of the Keeper of the Doors of Israel.

How do you determine a mezuzah? A mezuzah is established in every room that is over 2x2 m (except for the bathroom and toilets)

Where is the mezuzah set? On the jamb at the bottom of the upper third of the door

Do you place the mezuzah straight or diagonally? The Eastern denominations usually install the mezuzah straight while the Ashkenazi and Moroccan denominations usually install the mezuzah diagonally.

What is blessed when setting a mezuzah? Before setting a mezuzah, one must bless "Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the world, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to set a mezuzah." Sometimes it is customary to add and the blessing the "שהחיינו".

What is the common size for a mezuzah? A mezuzah case can be of any size. There are no regulations or laws regarding this. If so, the mezuzah case should match the dimensions of the doorframe. In Gala, the average mezuzah sizes are between 14-17 cm, this is a size that stands out enough on the door frame but is not eye-popping.

What is the desired parchment size? There are parchment size 10 cm, 12 cm, 15 cm.

What is a kosher parchment? A kosher parchment depends on 4 areas: the writer, the materials, the quality of the writing and its integrity. A sofer Setam  must be qualified, an observant Jewish man, who knows the laws of writing a mezuzah and maintains it. The parchment must be leather and the writing handwritten in Setam letters.
